(Re)imagining African Independence
The fortieth anniversary of the independence of the African countries colonized by Portugal presents a valuable opportunity to reassess how colonialism has been «imagined» through the medium of the moving image. The essays collected in this volume investigate Portuguese colonialism and its filmic and audio-visual imaginaries both during and after the Estado Novo regime, examining political propaganda films shot during the liberation wars and exploring the questions and debates these generate. The book also highlights common aspects in the emergence of a national cinema in Angola, Mozambique and Guinea-Bissau.

Este ebook partilha conhecimento sobre os filmes programados num "campo, contracampo, fora de campo" sobre a colecção colonial da Cinemateca. Revelam-se descobertas sobre os filmes mas também há ressonâncias relativas ao estado do arquivo. Muitos títulos não são programáveis devido ao estado de conservação em que se encontram. Porém, passos nesse sentido, nascidos da comunhão de vontades, têm sido dados. Este é um contributo para animar o arquivo dando visibilidade ao trabalho que arquivistas, investigadores, programadores, artistas se empenham em ir fazendo.​

The fortieth anniversary of the independence of Portuguese-speaking African countries is the pretext for analysing how Portuguese colonialism has been imagined by means of the moving image. In this issue of Comunicação & Sociedade, the refection proposed by the articles compiled under the title Colonial imaginaries: propaganda, militancy and “resistance” in the cinema aims to expand our knowledge of the men and women imagined via the cinema under (post-)colonialism, during and after the Estado Novo regime (1926-1974).
